Mixer Is Off, Xbox Teams Up With Facebook Gaming

The head of the Xbox division, Phil Spencer, has announced that the video game live streaming platform Mixer will be shutting down in July. This statement is not surprising, seeing Mixer has not had a significant increase in the last 1 year. As a new platform, it is very tough against rivals such as Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and even Facebook Gaming.

With Mixer turned off, the Mixer community will be moved to the Facebook Gaming platform. Starting July 22nd, the website and Mixer app when accessed by members will be transferred to Facebook Gaming. For video game streamers called “Mixer Partners” also automatically become Facebook Gaming partners.

According to info, Microsoft paid around $ 20 to 30 million USD to game streamer Ninja to move from Twitch to Mixer. Apart from Ninja, popular game streamers Shroud, King Gothalion and Faze Ewok also moved to Mixer in the not too distant future when Ninja joined. But Ninja has been out of luck since joining Mixer, from having more than 14 million followers on Twitch, to now only having 3 million followers on Mixer. Esports consultant Rod Breslau shared the price offered by Facebook Gaming to Ninja and Shroud, but they refused. This allows these streamers to return to Twitch if they wish, or move to another livestream platform.

Microsoft’s gaming division’s main focus is their cloud gaming Project xCloud, and the subscription service Xbox Game Pass. A few weeks ago Microsoft announced that the future of the Xbox is not limited to console machines, but with their online-based services. Microsoft is targeting the number of Project xCloud game players to reach up to 2 billion users. For the Game Pass itself, they use the strategy of every exclusive game Microsoft will enter at the time of its release.

Giant Bomb game media editor, Jeff Gerstmann, said he did not agree about merging Mixer with Facebook Gaming. According to him the “Login with Facebook” button was the thing most often ridiculed.
