Even though 10% tax applies, the price of steam games remains the same

Some time ago gamers in Indonesia were panicked by a new policy where every purchase of online items, which in this case includes digital games, will be subject to a tax of 10%. The policy will be effective on 1 July 2021 or today.

It is feared that the new policy will burden gamers who like to buy digital games, especially if the 10% tax excludes the extra tax that must be issued by players, for example when buying a Steam wallet.

However, it seems that these concerns do not need to continue because it turns out that the new policy does not affect the prices of games or in-game items on the Steam Store. Entering the Steam Summer Sale, gamers have flocked to buy their favorite games as there is a big discount. And it turns out, the game price after and before the 10% tax policy from the Indonesian government remains the same. This means that the new prices installed on the Steam Store include 10% tax for the government. So the prices posted on the Steam Store are as cheap and as expensive as they are, including taxes that are charged to gamers.

For now there is no indication that this new tax policy will burden players. However this is only for Steam. There is no further information whether similar policies also apply in other marketplaces.

So for those of you who are looking for massive discounts during the Steam Summer Sale, you don’t need to worry anymore about the tax burden. By the way, how many rupiah did you spend during the Steam Summer Sale?
